Akron, Ohio, has long been a cradle of aviation innovation, from the early days of dirigibles to modern aerospace advancements. This rich history will take center stage at the Props and Pistons Festival (August 16–17, 2025), at the historic Akron Fulton Airport. This event promises a weekend filled with aerial displays, vintage aircraft, and a deep dive into the city's aviation heritage.
Akron: The Birthplace of Airship Innovation
In the early 20th century, Akron emerged as a hub for lighter-than-air flight. In 1910, Goodyear established its Aeronautics Department, leading to the construction of the massive Goodyear Airdock in 1929. This colossal structure, measuring 1,175 feet in length and 325 feet in width, was the largest building without interior supports at the time.

The Airdock was instrumental in building iconic airships, such as the USS Akron (ZRS-4), the world's first flying aircraft carrier, capable of launching and recovering fighter planes mid-air. These innovations solidified Akron's reputation as a leader in aviation technology.

The Goodyear Blimp: A Century in the Skies
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Goodyear Blimp's inaugural flight. The first blimp, "Pilgrim," took to the skies on June 3, 1925, over Mogadore, Ohio. Over the decades, the blimp evolved from a military reconnaissance tool during World War II to a symbol of corporate advertising and a fixture at major sporting events. Today, four semi-rigid Goodyear Blimps operate worldwide, featuring advanced technologies such as high-definition cameras and quieter propulsion systems.

Akron Fulton Airport: A Historic Airfield
Established in 1929, Akron Fulton Airport has been central to the city's aviation narrative. Founded by World War I pilot Bain "Shorty" Fulton, the airport became a training ground for pilots and a manufacturing site for military aircraft during World War II. Notably, Goodyear Aircraft produced over 4,000 FG-1D Corsair fighter planes here, making a significant contribution to the war effort.

The airport’s Art Deco terminal, completed in 1931, stands as one of Akron’s most iconic architectural landmarks and a lasting tribute to the golden age of aviation. With its streamlined design, geometric detailing, and stylized motifs, the terminal reflects the optimism and technological ambition of the early 20th century—a time when air travel was still a marvel of modern engineering. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the terminal not only embodies the aesthetic elegance of the Art Deco movement but also symbolizes Akron’s enduring commitment to innovation in aviation.
For decades, this building has served as a bustling hub for both commercial flights and military operations, playing a pivotal role in the city's aviation history. Today, it remains a visual anchor at Akron Fulton Airport, connecting visitors to the rich heritage of flight that helped define the city’s identity.
